It will be based on four pillars: building a hydrogen value chain, research and development projects, educating specialised staff and conducting activities to support regulatory processes.
This is the third agreement on the establishment of Hydrogen Valleys in Poland. Earlier this year, letters of intent establishing two Hydrogen Valleys were signed: Subcarpatian and Lower Silesian. Work on the establishment of another two valleys is in progress: Silesian and Greater Polish Valleys.
– Signing another letter of intent on establishing a Hydrogen Valley is a proof of successive building of the foundations for hydrogen economy in Poland - said the Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment Ireneusz Zyska. - The Polish government recognises the potential of hydrogen and will soon adopt a prepared Hydrogen Strategy. I am convinced that the hydrogen sector will bring significant added value to the Polish economy, making it innovative - he added.
The draft of the "Polish Hydrogen Strategy until 2030 with an outlook until 2040" was adopted on 14 October by the Joint Commission of the Government and Local Self-Government.
The project will probably be presented to the government in November. It is assumed that hydrogen valleys will become centres for creating an ecosystem of hydrogen economy. Large-scale investments and cooperation between universities educating staff and the scientific world providing technological knowledge are to be concentrated here.
One of the important elements will be the likely specialisations of hydrogen valleys, which will naturally arise from the activities of leader companies in each valley, i.e. entrepreneurs who play a key role in the supply chain. For example, in the Lower Silesian Hydrogen Valley, the role of such a leader may be played by KGHM, and in the Mazovian Hydrogen Valley - by PKN Orlen.
Orlen aims to build an ecosystem of partnerships for the development and dissemination of hydrogen technologies, which are part of its strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The company is one of the three largest hydrogen producers in Europe, but currently uses 'grey' hydrogen produced from fossil fuels, suitable for industrial processes. For this reason, it is working to offer the market pure hydrogen of a quality suitable for use in transport or energy.
Our priority is to develop technologies for the production of green hydrogen, produced from renewable energy sources. That is why we are initiating the creation of the Mazovian Hydrogen Valley, which will be an effective support in achieving this goal. Integration of business and science will make it possible to carry out large-scale hydrogen investments, contributing to the development of domestic industry and increasing the competitiveness of the Polish economy.
PKN Orlen CEO Daniel Obajtek (quoted in a press release)Investments in low- and zero-emission hydrogen generation sources are planned in Mazovia, such as in Płock and Ostrołęka. Orlen is planning hydrogen hubs, where it is considering the use of technology to produce hydrogen from waste and from renewable sources. Yes The hydrogen produced will be used in transport, power generation, municipalities and agriculture. PESA may offer a prototype hydrogen locomotive, Toyota - hydrogen powered cars, Solaris - hydrogen powered buses, and Siemens – electrolysers.
