  • EDP in Poland with more than twofold increase in contracted capacity in distributed solar projects

In 2023, more Polish enterprises consistently prioritized sustainable development and green energy. EDP Energia Polska, a provider of photovoltaic solutions for businesses, reported that the company and its subsidiaries entered into more than 660 contracts with firms operating in Poland last year. It is a twofold increase from 2022. This surge in agreements translates into more than 100MWp of newly added solar capacity contracted in companies, enough to power more than 20,000 homes.

EDP Energia Polska (EDP EP), part of the global EDP group, has been supporting the energy transition of Polish businesses since 2020, offering photovoltaic solutions and various financing models for different needs. The company's latest results underscore companies’ high levels of interest in renewable energy sources. Last year, EDP in Poland signed 665 contracts, which means that, on average, nearly two additional companies invested in EDP’s photovoltaics per day in 2023.

e have noticed that the interest of Polish entrepreneurs in green energy, especially photovoltaics, is constantly growing. In order to respond to these needs and support the business community, we want to share the knowledge and experience we have at EDP EP. We have been an integral part of the Polish energy transition since 2020, and we believe that together with the Polish Climate Congress we can accelerate changes for the better

says Remigiusz Piwowarski, Development Director at EDP Energia Polska

The record-breaking number of agreements secured by EDP EP in 2023 resulted in a more than twofold (124%) increase in contracted capacity compared to 2022. In 2023, EDP in Poland contracted over 100MWp of solar energy capacity in companies, marking the highest annual result since the company's entrance in Poland. For perspective, this capacity is sufficient to supply electricity to approximately more than 20,000 single-family homes (assuming that an average 4-person household consumes 5,000 kWp per year.). Some of EDP EP's business customers included well-known companies such as ALDI and Emitel.

Through sustainable energy sources, EDP in Poland is supporting the energy transition of the Polish economy and reducing the environmental impact of domestic businesses. The contracts signed in 2023 will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 81,000 tonnes annually. To absorb this amount of carbon dioxide, nature would require more than 13,500 million adult trees. Besides reducing the carbon footprint, photovoltaic panel installations will also enable companies to lower the cost of their electricity bills.

EDP Group is not just about solar and wind energy. In March, the company took another step towards decarbonising customers in energy-intensive industries by teaming up with zero-carbon heat provider Rondo Energy. The partnership will enable the use of renewable wind and solar energy to generate heat. Powering industrial heat with renewable energy is a global opportunity for 7TW of additional sustainable power generation. It is one of the key technologies of our time to tackle climate change quickly and at scale.

Month after month, we are confirming that our offerings meet the expectations of entrepreneurs eager to invest in independent and sustainable energy sources. The results represent a significant contribution towards building a zero and low-emission energy sector. We are thrilled to drive the Polish economy with clean energy, sharing the experience of the EDP group, a global leader in sustainable solutions. We will continue to support Polish businesses by offering solutions that allow businesses to become more independent from the energy grid, thus saving on the electricity bill

said Ireneusz Kulka, Country Manager of EDP Energia Polska

The global trend towards green energy solutions was mirrored by EDP's performance in Poland. The EDP group contracted a total of 620 MWp of capacity with business clients in Poland and countries such as Portugal, Spain, Italy, Belgium and Brazil. This resulted in an increase of almost 80% compared to 2022. Consequently, the group now boasts around 1,500 MWp of contracted capacity in these markets.

    Flexible offer

EDP considers the individual needs of each enterprise, their sustainable business strategies, and financial capabilities, providing different business models. In this way, clients can finance a renewable clean energy source by investing upfront, paying in instalments or through the as a service model.

The PV-as-a-service model is a particularly attractive solution for companies that want to invest in photovoltaics without upfront costs. In this option, the investment cost is covered by EDP and the savings on energy bills are visible immediately after the photovoltaic installation is commissioned. Such innovations can speed up the energy transition, particularly for smaller and medium-sized enterprises with limited capital. EDP believes that every company should be able to implement its own sustainable practices, which are essential for the development of modern business in the long term.
